3Below (Manring, Gunn, Arreola, Pina) live recordings

We are very happy to announce the official live release from 3Below, now on pre-sale.

This project has been in the works for a while, but the shows have mostly been limited to Mexico. We finally have something for everyone else to hear!

3Below features three extended range instruments played by Michael Manring (Jaco Pastorius alumni, creator of the Hyperbass), Trey Gunn (Warr Guitarist with King Crimson), Alonso Areolla (Mexican bassist, writer and poet).

Their latest release, "Live in Mérida”, was recorded on November 5, 2023 at the Palacio del La Música de Mérida in the Yucatan in Mexico. During this performance, they were joined by special guest Emmanuel Pina on the oud.

Jon Hassell (March 22, 1937 - June 26, 2021)

Jon Hassell has been a constant a hero of mine.

For many years, staring at me every day, was a short list of hero names. Jon was the only musician on that list.

My heroes are, pretty much, based on persistence of vision. He had that dial set to high.

I have never played any of his music. I have never played with him. I’ve never seen him perform live. I know nothing about his personal or even professional life. All I know is from within the music. That has been enough to consistently set me on fire.

I can never listen to Jon’s recordings casually. They are an immediate jolt to my creative life and that’s how I approach them. I always find something startling and inspiring there. With most listenings, the seed of idea appears that I can take, plant into my world and grow something of my own. For me, this is a pinnacle of musicianship – that even one small phrase can open up whole worlds. Of course, you must make the effort to take it and run. Jon’s ideas, for me, come pre-built with running shoes.

His background is presented elsewhere, but it is of significant note that he studied with both Stockhausen and Pandit Pran Nath.

10-part Podcast - Trey Gunn & Markus Reuter

Markus Reuter and I have done the most complete interview/discussion I have ever participated in.

It started out as one segment of his ongoing Podcast, but we quickly became so engaged that it blossomed out to 10 full episodes!
The spine of the discussion was a thorough look through all of my work -- through all the different time periods, instruments and approaches. Because Markus is so deeply informed about all the music he was full of deep and interesting questions. Sometimes extremely detailed questions about a specific piece or a story he had heard. We covered all of it!
(Keep in mind, all of these stories are entirely my own perspective.)
However, the fascinating thing that happened over the course of these discussions is that they really were discussions and dialogue -- not an interview. So, we ended up veering off into some strange and interesting topics including movement, psychology, martial arts, card magic, practice, trance states, leaving things incomplete, aging, innocence and so many other unexpected things that always ended up tying themselves back to music.
We did one whole episode just on exploring our compositional process. And we even did another where I interviewed Markus about his earliest musical experience.
This was an amazing process.
Topics touched on in Part Two

The making of Crimson's "VROOOM" ep + "THRAK", "TCOL", hard panning, The Third Star, Toni Childs, Shrinivas, David Bottrill, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Michael Brook, Real World Studios, The ProjeKcts(1, 2, 3 & 4), Quodia, Eno, Deception Of The Thrush, Oyster Soup, UKZ, TOOL, playing without hearing yourself the end of KC for me and more.

King Crimson - The Discipline Era Transcriptions

I am very happy to announce we have now put up for sale the latest King Crimson transcription book.

The Discipline Era Transcriptions

The book includes entire full-band transcriptions, tabs and drum notation of all three releases:

Discipline
Beat
Three Of A Perfect Pair

This version of King Crimson (Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Bill Bruford) shocked the world with the pioneering musical language brought forth on the "Discipline" release in 1981. They went on to record two more albums in this configuration -- "Beat" and "Three of a Perfect Pair".

Baking Cassette Tapes

I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole and the only way out is through.

About 8 weeks ago I started going through old boxes of tapes and digitizing them. The first batch was from the Sylvian/Fripp writing sessions at David’s apartment in London. Then it was Sunday All Over The World writing and rehearsals. Then Robert Fripp String Quintet shows. Most were cassettes with a few DATs mixed in.
